Video differs from other disciplines in digital media in that you work in time. An image can be read at a glance; a video unfolds second by second, and each clip, each transition and each sound contributes to how the viewer experiences the content. This demands planning that is greater than many new to the field expect.

§Storyboard and planning

Before the camera is turned on, the sequence is drawn up in a storyboard: a series of sketches showing the key images, camera angles, and transitions in order. A storyboard forces you to make decisions in advance that would otherwise cost expensive shooting time to figure out later. For animation and motion graphics the storyboard is often even more important because the entire sequence must be built from the ground up, frame by frame.

§Recording, lighting and sound on site

Good video starts at the recording, not in the editing. Poor light or poor sound can rarely be fully corrected afterwards. Ensure stable camera (tripod or stabilisation), good and even light, and record sound as close to the source as possible — a microphone close to the speaker gives far better results than the camera's built-in microphone at a distance.

§Cutting rhythm and editing

  • 02Cut away what doesn't carry the message — the first version is almost always too long.
  • 03Use transitions sparingly — a simple cut is often stronger than an advanced effect.
  • 04Build the sound layer consciously — music sound effects and dialogue should support not drown out each other.

§Codec, resolution and frame rate

When the clip is cut, it must be exported in the right format for where it's to be shown. Video coding (codec) plays a big role here: H.264 remains the most common codec for video upload and distribution, used among other things as the standard recommendation for YouTube. The newer H.265 (HEVC) typically compresses 25–50 percent more efficiently at the same image quality, but requires more processing power to decode and isn't equally supported everywhere. The choice therefore depends on where the video is to be shown and what equipment the recipient has.

§Sound and final export

Sound is often what reveals an amateur product quickest, even when the visual side is strong. Ensure consistent sound level throughout the clip, remove background noise, and listen through with headphones before you export. Always save the project file alongside the exported video so you can make changes if the customer wants modifications later.

In video, planning is invisible in the finished product, but it is the reason the clip flows and is not stuck together.
